Optional: A drawing tablet can be helpful for sketching and rapid ideation.

Weeks 1-2: Building Your Foundation in UI/UX Design

Lesson 1: Introduction to UI/UX – The Why and What
Welcome to the dynamic world of UI/UX design! This foundational lesson demystifies these often-confused terms, revealing their individual importance and powerful symbiosis. User Interface (UI) is the visual and interactive landscape of a product—the buttons, typography, color palettes, and icons that users see and touch. Think of it as the cockpit of an airplane, where every switch and display is placed with precision for clarity and control.

User Experience (UX), however, is the entire journey. It’s the user’s holistic perception of the interaction, from their first impression to the final outcome. In our airplane analogy, UX is the entire flight—the ease of boarding, the comfort of the seats, the smoothness of the flight, and the feeling of a perfect landing. We’ll dive deep into why a user-centered design approach is not just a best practice but a crucial driver of engagement, loyalty, and business growth.

Hands-on Example: Analyze two apps you use daily (e.g., a music streaming service and a navigation app). Screenshot key screens and identify 5 distinct UI elements. Then, describe 3 aspects of the UX (positive or negative), explaining how the UI choices contribute to that overall experience.

Lesson 2: The Design Thinking Process – A Roadmap to Innovation
Design is not just about making things look good; it’s about solving problems. The Design Thinking process is your roadmap—a human-centered, five-stage framework for innovation: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. This lesson will guide you through this non-linear cycle, showing you how to move from ambiguity to clarity. You’ll learn to step into your users’ shoes (Empathize), synthesize their needs into a clear problem statement (Define), brainstorm a wide array of potential solutions (Ideate), build tangible models to test your ideas (Prototype), and gather real-world feedback to refine your solution (Test). This iterative process ensures that you remain focused on solving the right problem for the right people.

Hands-on Example:* Identify a common daily frustration (e.g., managing household chores, finding parking). Apply the first two stages: Empathize by describing the user and their pain points. Then, Define the problem by crafting a How Might We… question to guide your creative thinking.

Weeks 3-4: User Research – Understanding Your Audience

To design for users, you must first understand them. This module is your deep dive into the methods and techniques of effective user research. You’ll learn how to plan and conduct user interviews, deploy surveys, and create user personas and empathy maps that bring your target audience to life. We’ll cover both qualitative and quantitative research, showing you how to transform raw data into powerful insights that inform every design decision you make, ensuring your product is not just usable, but truly valuable.

Weeks 5-8: Structuring the Experience – From Wireframes to Prototypes

With a deep understanding of your user, it’s time to start building the blueprint. This section focuses on Information Architecture (IA) and Interaction Design (IxD). You’ll learn to organize content logically using sitemaps and card sorting, and map out user journeys with detailed user flows. From there, you will translate these structures into low-fidelity wireframes to establish layout and hierarchy, before advancing to high-fidelity, interactive prototypes that look and feel like a real product.

Weeks 9-12: Visual Excellence and Usability Testing

Here, we bring your designs to life with the principles of exceptional UI design. You’ll explore color theory, typography, visual hierarchy, and creating consistent design systems that reinforce brand identity and enhance usability. But a beautiful design is only effective if it works for real people. You will learn how to plan, conduct, and analyze usability testing sessions. This critical feedback loop is where you uncover friction points, validate your assumptions, and find opportunities to elevate the user experience from good to great.

Weeks 13-16: Advanced Topics & Building Your Capstone Portfolio Project

In this final module, you will prepare to launch your career in UI/UX design. We’ll explore advanced and future-facing topics, including designing for accessibility (WCAG), ethical design considerations, and the impact of emerging technologies like AI, voice interfaces, and augmented reality. The majority of this time will be dedicated to your capstone project. You will take a project from conception to a high-fidelity, tested prototype, documenting each stage of your process. This project will become the cornerstone of your professional portfolio, a tangible demonstration of your skills, and your ticket to landing your first role in the exciting and impactful field of UI/UX design.
